FOR EMPLOYERS: 10 TIPS TO EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE SAFETY TO EMPLOYEES
Employee safety should be at the core of every employer’s policies, or the workplace may fall into a state of chaos. A workplace that does not provide or adequately communicate its safety policies to its workforce will suffer a serious deficiency in productivity as workplace hazards are sure to happen.
For an employer of labor to effectively communicate its safety policies to employees, the following tips might be helpful:
1. Have a Written Guide Every employer should ensure that there is a binding safety document which consists of every safety measure that is in place, what safety types of equipment are present at the workplace and how to use them, what employees should do in case of a safety breach, as well as who they are to report concerns to.
2. Watch out for Communication Overload
Employees are busy people and a workplace is a place filled with activities, so information should be made short and direct, while the most important detail is put first. As humans, we also tend to have a very short attention span, this is another reason why information overload should be avoided so as not to allow the core message to be lost in the process.
3. Post Signs, Illustrations and Images Signs and illustrations should be present in strategic places throughout the workplace, to enable employees have an idea of safety tips at every turn. Images of safe actions to be taken during certain situations can also be used when and where necessary.
4. Hold Periodic Meetings Periodic meetings should be scheduled with members of staff to enlighten them about safety, as well as open communication channels for safety concerns to be raised, and adjustments made to fit into the latest trends.
5. Require Appropriate Training Employees should be required to undergo mandatory training required to equip them with knowledge necessary, company safety policies, techniques and use of safety equipment.
6. Have a Safety Budget
A budget should be created for the procurement of safety equipment, and training and other safety necessities. An employer should also not settle for low-quality equipment, as this may discourage employees to use them.
7. Provide Safety Comment Cards
Safety comment cards allow employees to openly raise safety concerns and complaints when necessary. Providing these allows for safety concerns to be taken seriously across the company.
8. Send emails periodically
An employer could also choose to send periodic emails containing workplace safety tips and new safety developments to all employees. This will enable employees to get a better insight into safety.
9. Conduct routine safety checks
The HSE department in an organization should conduct safety checks routinely, to mark out flaws in safety policies, identify safety issues and concerns amongst employees, and also figure out necessary improvements.
10. Share Incident Reports and Case Studies/strong> These could serve as lessons for employees, in order to avoid similar occurences from happening again, and also let employees know the effects that such incidents may have on the workplace, individuals and productivity.
