ESSENTIAL RULES OF PERSONAL SAFETY

rules of personal safety

We are always faced with hazards all around our daily lives: in our homes, on our way out, in a public gathering, and almost anywhere we find ourselves. For this reason, one should endeavor to make one’s safety a top priority by taking active steps towards this. In this article, we will be sharing some essential rules for ensuring personal safety.

1. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

The first rule is to take responsibility for your safety. Do not look to anyone to help keep you safe, as it is a way of putting yourself at risk. When and if you find yourself in a risky situation, you should take responsibility for yourself, and take reasonable steps to keep yourself safe.

Safety requires independence!

2. STAY ALERT AND BE AWARE

The number 2 rule of personal safety is to stay alert and be consciously aware of our environment. Make sure to note al the cues around you, as there are always warning signs of danger or hazard around. The only problem is that most people ignore warning signs.

Also, know that you’re never paranoid about your safety. A warning sign is a warning sign.

3. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

The next rule of personal safety is to trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, then it just isn’t right. You’re not paranoid, it is just your instincts telling you to be careful. Your safety should never be trifled with, by you or anybody else.

4. DO NOT OVERSHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Yeah, almost everyone shares every little detail of their lives on social media nowadays – what they had for breakfast, where they are having their next date, what their career goals are, etc. It’s become a dangerous trend. Putting out all these details gives burglars, thieves or other criminal beings an idea of what we are up to, and also gives them hints on how to plan attacks or other criminal acts.

So, before you share anything else on social media after reading this, you should think thoroughly about the likely harm such information you’re putting out may have on you or your loved ones. Be intentional about your safety.

5. BE MINDFUL OF PHONE CONVERSATIONS

Another rule of personal safety that we need to consider is being mindful of phone conversations. Some people pick random calls from unknown numbers and start to divulge personal information, while others, with the impression that they know the person on the other end of the phone, feel comfortable to start sharing. It is advised that when you get a phone call from a random number, let the other person disclose their identity first. And you should never disclose sensitive information like your whereabouts or full name over a random phone call.

Your safety should never be trifled with, so you do not put yourself in harm’s way.

6. GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU ARE CALM

The number six rule of personal safety is that you give the impression that you are calm, confident, and that you know where you’re going, wherever you may find yourself. A person looking to mob you will be looking out for cues that indicate you’re a stranger, or that you can be easily harmed.

7. DO NOT MOVE AROUND WITH EXCESSIVE CASH

Do not move around with excessive cash. This is to prevent you from losing a valuable amount of money in case of an attack. This is a very important personal safety tip.

Another reason is that if a thief attempts to steal from you and find a very little amount of money, they are more likely to let you go, with the impression that you’re “not a good catch”.
